Proverbs 18:10 "The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe."
Compare with those who do not have the Lord:
Proverbs 18:11 "The rich man's wealth is his strong city, and as a high wall in his own conceit."
(Also, read Ps. 73)
Unfortunately today, the rich man's wealth is being seen for just what it is... a vapor that can simply disappear overnight. When reading today's headlines, I sure don't want to depend on that "strong city" to be my refuge. I think of the Twin towers, how strong and bold they looked reaching up into the sky for all to see for miles around, yet how quickly they crumbled to the ground when the planes hit on 9/11. Our foundations are being shaken in America and for that matter all over the world like never before.
The "name of the Lord" truly is a strong tower that we can run to and be safe even in a day when the foundations are shaken. His name is His manifested perfections -- faithfulness, power, mercy, grace, love, etc. -- all the things we must rely on when in danger. And His power is true power that cannot be shaken even if the whole earth is shaken. What is your strong tower today? How secure is it? I have wrestled with fear and insecurity most of my life, and each time my "strong tower" was shaken I saw it for what it was and learned that I only had one strong tower I could truly depend on -- the Lord Himself. The world cries out "where is God!?" when terrible things happen all around us, but God is right here, shaking the false foundations men trust in so that they will see the truth and come to the only sure strong tower, the only true foundation of life and happiness that exists. Will you come to Him then, or will you shake your fist at Him in defiance refusing to let go of those things that are crumbling around you? Many -- those who love righteousness -- will cling all the more to Jesus and see Him manifest His own power and glory in their lives. Many others will rather simply die with their gods.
What is God doing in the world today? Where is He in all of this? What should we do?
Psa 11:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. In the LORD put I my trust: how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?
Psa 11:2 For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart.
Psa 11:3 If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?
Psa 11:4 The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD's throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.
Psa 11:5 The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.
Psa 11:6 Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and a horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.
Psa 11:7 For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright.
The "wicked" are those who refuse His grace continually, regardless of how long He holds it out to them offering it. He is always ready and willing to forgive and accept as His child, ANY who are willing to come to Him. The “righteous” are simply those who say, "yes Lord, I am a sinner, I am wicked, and I now accept your sacrifice for my salvation and turn to You alone to be my Savior". No one is righteous of himself, but only His righteousness makes us "the righteous" -- those who are born of His Spirit. The day of reckoning for the whole world is very close at hand, it seems, if we are to look at the signs Jesus gave us in Matthew 24 and that the Old Testament prophets, Daniel, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and others predicted. We are in a day of grace. God has been holding out His grace for the last 2000 years to "whosoever will". He tells us "today is the day of salvation. If you hear His voice, come!" Don't put it off. "Today" may quickly pass you by. Now is the time. Today is the day.
Am I speaking doom and gloom? No, I am holding out to you life, blessing, true security, and trying to lead you away from sure doom and gloom! No, those who disregard the Lord's wonderful message of good news -- the Gospel -- that all who will come to Him can be saved and live free of evil for eternity with Him and partake of His wonderful love, light, life, and all the unspeakable wonderful gifts He freely bestows on His own, and yet choose the evil in this world, and choose their own gods, or to be their own god... those are they who have nothing but doom and gloom. If they speak to you of peace and security and wealth, it is another false tower they are building that will come down. And there will be one who will come proclaiming peace, security, and safety for the whole world and people will be so hungry for it that they will readily accept him rather than the Lord, (see 2 Thess. 2). He will promise to build up their strong towers and make them comfortable and secure and prosperous once again. He will very shortly be seen for who he is, however, and his strong towers will crumble along with all those who follow him. This day is coming soon. The stage is being set.
