Excuses For Not Believing

Excuse 1: What about all the people in the world who never heard of Jesus?

Answer: What about you who have been given the grace to hear again and again and again yet you refuse to believe? What about you who have His written Word and access to countless materials that you could easily read and search out to find Him and what He is really saying to you? What about you who have access to teachers that have tried to teach you about Him yet you refuse? If God is gracious enough with you to continue reaching out to you, showing you His love through His people that you spurn, and giving you access to so much and blessing your life with all you need, won’t He also reach out to anyone in this world who cries out to Him and wants to know Him? Anyone anywhere who seeks Him He will reveal Himself to. And those who are not seeking Him, He is even yet reaching out to. He wishes that none should perish but all would come to know Him and His salvation.

Isa 59:1: “Behold, Jehovah's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear”

Excuse 2: What about all the hypocrites in the church? Christians are all hypocrites.

Answer: Every one of us has our areas of hypocrisy—untruthfulness with ourselves and others and untruthfulness before God. The only One Who doesn’t is God. He demands from each one of us truth in our inner being. Are you being truthful in your inner being before Him? Are you turning Him,(the truthful One), away because of the hypocrisy of another imperfect man? At least those who are going to church are seeking to find Him and His salvation from their hypocrisy. Are you? One day you will stand before God and all that is in your heart will be exposed before a Holy and righteous God. One Who has always been true to that holiness and righteousness. What will you say to Him? You can be truthful now with yourself in your inner being before Him and repent of your own hypocrisy… after all, the real reason you won’t come to Him is because it would make you have to face yourself before Him, accountable to Him, so that you would have to see yourself before His righteousness as unrighteous, and that you sinned against Him. Perhaps you are using others’ sin to excuse your own. Are you being honest with yourself?

Psalm 51:6: “Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts”

John 3:19-21: “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

“For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
“But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”

Men want to be independent of God, so that they are not accountable to Him, thinking they can find sufficiency in themselves and this world.

Are you truly willing to find out if what He says is true? Or is your excuse merely a hypocritical cover for being unwilling to be accountable before your creator, which you will be one day anyway. If you are willing to be true, don’t measure yourself against another but measure yourself against God’s standard.

Excuse 3: There’s so many religions in the world. How can you say yours is right and others are wrong? All paths lead to God.

Answer: John 14:6: “Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

It’s not what I say or what anyone else says that is true, but what God says. Religion is the creation of man, but God is not something out of the imagination of man. He is our creator. He is a personal being Who created us in His own image, to have fellowship with. He reveals Himself to mankind and tells us clearly what has hindered that fellowship, and how it is remedied.

Christianity is different from all religions of the world. All religion seeks to somehow turn man into a god of sorts or reach some perfect state of being by his own doing or works. It is the creation of man, as he rejects his God, to fill that void that was created by making himself new gods, or by trying to be his own. God reveals Himself to us, the story of His creation, the history of mankind, in His Word. God revealed Himself to us through Jesus Christ, God becoming flesh and coming to this world.

Every religious book has its contradictions and none can tell you the beginning from the end. But the Bible proves itself in that it has 66 books with 40 different authors, all inspired of God and all with the same integrated message system, written over a span of hundreds of years, none contradicting the other, and tells us the beginning from the end accurately. No one has proved it untrue. Archeology has always backed it up. Though many have tried to disprove it none can truthfully. It’s prophecies have accurately been fulfilled in the past and it tells us what the end will be for this world and mankind. It reveals to us a holy perfect God and the salvation that He alone has given mankind through faith in Him.

Such an incredible free gift and a greater love the world doesn’t know. Yet men reject Him and refuse to as much as read His Word to find Him. They knock it, condemn it, and blaspheme it without so much as searching it out to find out what it says and if it is true and how different and remarkable it is from every other book under the sun. It reveals the origins of all other religions and where they come from. And it reveals what the end of them will be. These other paths lead men away from the true God and the only salvation He has offered through His own blood to mankind. Isn’t it enough for you that He gave His own blood for you? In most religions, man is required to earn salvation by his suffering and works. In Christianity, Christ suffered and died for us, giving Himself to us for the true salvation of the soul.

Excuse 4: I don’t need “salvation”. I am not a sinner. I’m a good person.

Answer: In comparison to what? What is your standard? How do you know what is good or bad? Where did that knowledge come from?

What do we need salvation from? We need salvation from our rebellion against God and our independence from Him. We are measured by His standards, not ours. His standards are written in the 10 commandments. Our pride and self-seeking nature has alienated us from the God Who created us and gave us life and created every single thing in the universe that we enjoy and need for life and sustenance.

It’s not about how “good” I am, compared to the next person. It’s about what I have done to God and how I compare to Him. How have I treated Him? Have I broken His law? He’s written in the heart of every human being a moral code. It’s called a conscience. Where do you think your conscience came from? Why does every person have a sense of justice and that injustice must be paid for? Why does every human being know that to take life is wrong? Most religions try to, in one way or another, either appease that conscience through good works, or destroy it.

When you break that moral code you feel it and it hurts your conscience until you either make it right somehow, or you continue to harden your heart against it until you’ve seared your conscience to the point you cannot feel anymore. That is the most dangerous place for a soul to be in. That is the cause of unspeakable evils done by mankind in this earth.

We are not able to save ourselves from sin. We may be able to a certain degree to have the self-discipline to stop certain acts and control ourselves, but we have a sin nature—a nature that wants to rebel against God and serve self. It causes us to be self-centered, selfish in our thoughts and deeds, and is at the root of all the misdeeds against God that we commit. It is greed, pride, hate, jealousy, and all the things that we do because of that. If we look into the law of God, and see this holy God and see how badly we’ve transgressed against Him, against His love, against His goodness, and against all He made us for, and we try to change ourselves and be reconciled to Him, we find we cannot on our own. Nor can we erase the crimes we’ve already committed against Him. This is what we need to be saved from.

This is what needs to be restored… our relationship with God. God wants to reconcile us to Himself. He is our only real life. One day all He created that even the worst sinner enjoys will be gone. Those who refuse His goodness and salvation will also be separated from Him and all life forever. But those who believe in Him and are reconciled to Him will share in His life, love, goodness, and all He is forever. All life comes from Him. He is life and there is none outside of Him or apart from Him. You’re heading toward an eternity of darkness and complete aloneness apart from Him unless you turn toward Him for His free gift of salvation to all those who simply receive it by faith. In Adam mankind inherited a sin nature. In Christ we are given salvation from it and a new heart.

Back to your claim of being a “good person”—

Rom 3:10-11: “as it is written: ‘There is none righteous, no not one, there is none that understands, there is none that seeks after God'.”

The atheist thinks he can be “good” outside of any god, and good in himself. How can he even know what “good” is? He will continually make and change his own definition and rules for that which of course will conflict with others’ rules and values for what is “good”, so there will be continual strife with his fellow man— those who gain the most power lording themselves and their way over others and oppressing them—and of course a separation from God, Who is the source of all that is truly good. He will call good evil and evil good, which we see much of today in our world which has rejected the conscience that God gave them and tried to deny what has been revealed throughout all history as good and evil, turning it around to their own destruction. The consequences of sin are always death—spiritual first, and then physical ultimately.

Yet, God graciously reaches out to all and “whosoever will may come”--

Rev 22:17: “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.”

Rev 3:20: “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”

John 3:15-18: “That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
“For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
“He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

Excuse 5: There so much evil in the world. If there is a good God then why doesn’t He end all the evil and suffering?

Answer: Most of this was answered above. The reason for evil is man’s rebellion against God. God created man for good, for His love, for sharing in His glory and life and goodness and all He is. He gave man a choice in the Garden of Eden. God didn’t create puppets. Man chose to rebel and the consequences of that is separation from God…death. Death means separation. Spiritual and physical death was the consequence.

Mankind has continued to sin and rebel against God. God’s ways are perfect. They are the way of life. Outside of that man tries to do his own thing which causes chaos. Man sears his conscience against evil and carries out more and more unspeakable evils against God and mankind and causes unspeakable suffering as a result. Evil is the result of rebellion against a holy righteous God and His righteous laws.

God is patient and long-suffering gathering those from each generation for salvation who will come to Him by faith. Those who will seek Him and find Him find His life and goodness even in the midst of suffering and have His promise one day that He will eradicate all evil, sin, and suffering. But His desire is for none to perish, and that all will come to repentance. Therefore He is long-suffering with evil. But the day will come when He will say enough, and will judge evil.

If he were to abolish all evil right now that would mean He would abolish all who are sinners, which would mean all of mankind who have rejected His salvation. That would mean you also, if you do not believe in Him. You judge evil in the world and others, but do not see it in yourself, or judged it there in your own heart, and have refused the only remedy. But until He accomplishes the salvation for all those who are His and who will come to Him, He is long-suffering toward evil. When it is judged, all those who chose to reject His only remedy for it, will also be judged with it.

Rom 2:1-5: “Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things.
“We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things.
"Do you suppose, O man--you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself--that you will escape the judgment of God?
“Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?
“But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God's righteous judgment will be revealed.”

2Pe 3:7-10: “But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.
“But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
“The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
“But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.”

He is giving you time—precious time—to find Him and to repent—change your mind and heart, turning to Him for salvation and reconciliation. Be reconciled to God then, while His goodness is being held out to you. Be reconciled to God then, while there is still air to breathe, sunshine, life, and health given you. See the goodness of God that is all around you, calling you to come to Him now while there is time. Time will soon run out.

Do you choose to dwell on the evil, and thus become a part of it? Or will you choose against it and come to His goodness and join with those who will be with Him in eternity where evil will be nonexistent? There is no evil in His presence. He cannot tolerate it. To do so would be to allow those He loves to be destroyed by it, just as we see people every day being destroyed by it in this earth. It has to be judged and it has to come to an end, so that all who love Him will be secure and at rest from it forever. For now He promises His children that no evil will destroy them or overcome them. He promises to preserve us and keep us through this life here even though for now we will have tribulation. He promises that one day all tears will be wiped away from our eyes and even the remembrance of evil will be gone.

Excuse 6: I don’t need any excuse, I just plain don’t believe in Him.

Answer: There is enough evidence that anyone who wants to know the truth can find Him. There is enough information that anyone who chooses to do an honest research can find the truth about Him. It is not a “blind” faith. God has in many ways revealed Himself to man. All have a choice to make. You can choose just simply not to believe. But if you are honest with yourself, you do have an excuse for that choice somewhere inside of you and you have chosen to not look at the facts but to find ways to explain away the facts rather than honestly search them out.

Most people who claim to not believe in God sound more like they have a very strong belief (mental assent) in Him but hate him, yet say they do not believe in Him. If they didn’t why are they so afraid of Him and feel so threatened by Christianity, but not by other belief systems in the world? Why do they have to spend all their energy trying to disprove God? Do you know for 100% certain God does not exist? Do you know for 100% certain you cannot know the truth therefore you are not accountable to it? Do you know for 100% certain the Bible is not His Word? If you don’t it is a pretty high gamble you are making. It is a gamble with all of eternity if His claims are true. It is a gamble you cannot afford to pay.

You are given this one chance of life to find Him and find out. He’s given you a promise that if you call out to Him in truth He’ll answer. He’s revealed and verified His Word to man and His will and His way and His purposes. Will you search them out and find the truth? Or do you choose to ignore it and take the consequences as they come whatever they may be? Or are you simply ignoring them and hoping they are not true? None of us knows if we’ll live another day. What a gamble it is to throw away today while we have time and life! If you make a decision to buy a home or a car, do you do your research to get the best deal? Most do more research to make the right decision with a purchase than they do with their eternal life. It’s up to you. You do have the choice. Yet God says no one can come to Him unless the Father enables him to.

John 6:44-47: “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.
“It is written in the Prophets, 'And they will all be taught by God.' Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me--
“not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father.
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.”

Will you allow the Father to draw you, and come to hear and learn that He may enable you to see and have life? Will you take heed when He is calling? Or will you turn away His invitation? You are not assured of another time granted you to come other than now.

John 6:37: “All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.”

There is a time when God is drawing, calling, convicting. If you turn Him away at that time you are allowing the spirits of darkness to control you and blind you. You need to come when you are called, and seek when He is drawing. You think you are going your own way but you are being manipulated by unseen powers of darkness and evil. You are never really in control of yourself or your destiny. You may have an illusion of it, but it is just that… an illusion.

2Co 4:3-4: “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
“In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”

Don’t turn away the truth when it is given to you, because you don’t know if you will be given another chance. Don’t harden your heart against the conviction of the Holy Spirit. He’s very longsuffering and patient but there will come a time it will end and your opportunity may be gone. God knows all things, and He knows the deepest motivations and desire of our hearts, whether they be for Him or against Him. If you truly desire to believe but lack assurance, ask Him for it, saying, “Lord, I believe, help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24)

2Th 2:7-12: “For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way.
“And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming.
“The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders,
“and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. (We live in a day when men say there is no truth!)
“Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, “ in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Who are those who are deceived? Those who refused to receive the truth, and who hated the truth. They hated it because they took pleasure in unrighteousness. God did not make it hard for anyone who wants to be saved from sin, death, evil, and separation from Him. He made it very easy and understandable. He made it as uncomplicated as it could possibly be. He simply says those who believe in Him (not an intellectual assent but a trusting into Him and all He is), can have His free gift, that we cannot earn, of eternal life.

He paid the penalty for our sin. The sin we could never pay for—for it does have to be paid for. Justice—true justice—demands that the penalty be paid. The penalty was death. Only death (separation eternally), can remedy such rebellion against a holy God! Only death could satisfy justice when one understands just what such rebellion is and how awful sin is. We see the awful consequences of the depravity of human conscience in much of the evil in our world, such as the holocaust. When we see ourselves in the presence of a perfect God Who hates sin and is perfect in goodness, love, righteousness, etc. in every way—only then can we see the only payment for sin against such is death—has to be death—separation from God—source of life, for all eternity.

God paid what we could not pay. He came to earth Himself in the form of man, taking on the weakness of flesh, and suffered the evils of mankind and the rejection of His own creation and allowed Himself to be crucified as payment for that penalty in our place, so that all who simply put their faith and trust in Him for salvation, He freely gives His Spirit to, to indwell them and make them a new creation fit for Heaven in His presence. This creation being one with a new heart and mind to learn to know Him and partake of His life once again, being united with Him; and one day to a final redemption from this world of corruption and from body’s of sin, to put on “incorruption — bodies that will go with our new nature that will be completely free from sin and all its consequences. Will you take an honest look at Who He is and what He says? Will you read His Word to find Him rather than to try to disprove Him? Will you ask Him to draw you and enable you to find Him? All who will, may come. And all who come He will never drive away—all who come honestly and sincerely.

The greatest injustice and evil of all, is the injustice of man to God, not God to man, or even man to man, as some assert. Man has turned away from His creator and tried to be sufficient apart from God Who created Him. And in that rebellion has crucified His Son, sent from above to reveal Himself to His creation, bringing them salvation and reconciliation. Then as that free gift of salvation is held out over and over, man has hatefully despised and rejected it and said, “No! We want to live without God! We don’t want a God! We want to be our own god!”

God, in His mercy, gives mankind what they ask for. He forces no one. Those who ask for life without Him will get that. Unfortunately they will find they are not sufficient in themselves to create life for themselves, or sustain it, or create anything they need, and that all the happiness they did have came from His graciousness to them even in their rebellion and unbelief. They’ll find that outside of God, not only are they not gods, able to create or sustain anything, but they are left without life and light and all things good. They are left with just themselves as they really are apart from their source of life. That is hell. They are left with a total loneliness, darkness, and tormenting fire. Not one thought or word of their own can bring anything into being that they desire, such as some think today. The lie that they can be a god will be horribly exposed for all that it is, and they will fully see they are nothing but dust, given life by the only true God of the Universe that is life itself, and that they threw it away.

Those who choose God will find that their creator made them for something more wonderful than they could ever have dreamed up or created for themselves.

1Co 2:9: “But, as it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him’.”

We will share in His glory, and all He is. We will be a part of all that. We will be intimately united with the most perfect goodness and love so pure that it is beyond our imagination or comprehension. All is satisfied and filled to overflowing completely and forever in Him alone. We were created with needs that were meant to be completely met in our union in Him. All our desires for pleasure are fulfilled in Him.

You see we do not have life in ourselves. Only God has life in Himself, and all those to whom He gives life have life.

1John 5:11-13: “And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.”

I hope you do make the right choice. I hope if you’ve gotten this far, and have honestly and thoughtfully read through this entire message, that you will seek to know the truth, and seek to know the only One Who is the Truth, the Life, and the Way, and turn your life over to Him in faith, believing all He has done for you. I’m sure there are many more excuses one can come up with, but what is any excuse good for that keeps you from the only true life—and that eternal?

Mat 16:25-26 “For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?”
